Wrather Arch

This remarkable sandstone arch is located along a tributary to the Paria River in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area. At one time, it was thought to be the second-longest span in North America. But it was not discovered [by Anglo/Hispanic settlers, that is to say] until 1957. It is almost inaccessible; one must backpack down the Paria River for 4-5 days, then hike a mile or two up the correct side canyon. Geologically, the arch is in a sandstone formation known as Navajo Sandstone.
