Description

New Douglas-fir seedling on old stump of Ponderosa pine.

Squirrels sometimes sit on stumps to chew open pine (and Doug-fir) cones, which can result in seeds dropping into the stump. The moist, rotting wood is a good germination site; the tree seedling should live until its roots are in the soil below.
