Mesa's edge

Description

Cliff at the edge of a mesa. It appears to be sandstone, but is actually volcanic tuff: compressed and partially welded volcanic ash. This layer, known as the Bandelier tuff, has a characteristically red color. The top of the mesa supports pinyon-juniper woodland and desert grasses.
