The red/gold light enhances the reddish color of the Navajo Sandstone. Canyon de Chelly National Monument encompasses only the rims of the canyons; the canyon bottoms remain in Navajo jurisdiction. The name "Chelly" is a mispronunciation of the Navajo word "tseyi," meaning "split rock place."
