Douglas-fir immature seed cones
Description
In late spring. The cones are still expanding; the cone scales are purple at this stage. The green trident-shaped bracts between the scales are indicative of Doug-fir. When mature, the scales will be brown, thick and woody; the bracts brown but papery.
Pseudotsuga menziesii, also called Doug-fir. The name is hyphenated to indicate that this is not a true fir (genus Abies).
