Winged hoodoo

Description

The caprock protecting this shale-clay column ("hoodoo") was narrowed at some point to where it could no longer protect the underlying soft rock, which then washed away. But the sandstone caprock has enough strength to hold up the unsupported "wing." At least for a while; it will eventually break off and fall.

Badlands on Navajo Nation, in the vicinity of Bisti Badlands.
