Log showing spiral wood grain

Many dead conifer trees, particularly in the high mountains, exhibit this type of spiral wood grain. I believe it comes from the mechanism of the inner bark cambium cells splitting both sideways (to provide for increasing girth) and vertically (as the tree increases in height).
