Rocky Muontain Maple leaves with red galls

Description

Acer glabrum. Large shrub or small tree with multiple stems. Grows in the mountains of the western U.S. The scarlet blotches on the leaves are common, caused by the mite Eriophyes calcercis. They do not seem to injure the shrub. In fall, the leaves merely turn a pale yellow.
