Rock formations at Plaza Blanca

Description

These rock formations were formed by erosion of a soft sandstone-like rock. Most of the pillars and towers are protected by a cap rock of harder material. This white rock appears to be sandstone, but is actually created from a deep deposit of pumice.

Plaza Blanca (near Abiquiu, NM) was one of the favorite subjects of artist Georgia O'Keefe.
