Setting new moon, dimly lit by Earthshine

The new moon is between the Earth and the Sun, so it is the side away from the Earth that is lit, and usually the side toward the Earth is dark. A day or two after the new moon, though, the "dark side" of the moon is dimly lit by "Earthshine." This is light from the sun reflecting off the Earth and back to the dark side of the new moon.

Here, the new moon is setting over Redondito Peak in Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico.

Also visible is the bright planet Venus, above and left of the Moon, and a dim red star between Venus and the Moon.
