Petrified sand dune and Ponderosa pine tree

Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Canyon de Chelly is eroded into the geologic stratum known as Navajo Sandstone. That formation was created from overlapping, coalescing sand dunes. At several places, these dunes are being revealed by erosion; this one is at the top of the canyon wall. The pine tree gives scale.
