Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) pollen cones

Description

The red structures are ripening pollen cones. When ripe, they turn brown and papery, and pollen dust blows out to be carried on the wind. Most conifer trees will display these in early spring. The name "Douglas-fir" (or "Doug-fir") is hyphenated to show that it is not a true fir [which are in genus Abies].
