Great horned owl perched in the Bisti badlands

Description

The Bisti badlands are virtually bereft of grass, and hence small mammals for owl prey. The surrounding grasslands are rich in prey, but lacking in vertical relief for nests or perching. This owl spends the day in the badlands and flies out to the grasslands at night to hunt.
