A slickrock valley

the Four Corners area is famous for "slick rock" - wind-polished sandstone. This beautiful example was found in Paria Canyon, in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Area in southern Utah. This geologic formation is known as the Navajo Sandstone. On the hill in the midground can be observed cross-bedding, resulting from sand laid down not by water but rather by wind, so the bedding planes are not parallel.
