Immature pollen cones of Ponderosa pine

Description

When mature in a couple of weeks, these become brown and papery, and release pollen to the air. These develop at the outer ends of branches every year.

The short yellowish spike-like things above the pollen cones are the beginning shoots of the new twig and needles.
