Camels with 1850s equipment

These camels were part of a historical display in celebration of Beale's Wagon Road Expedition. The exploration in 1857 explored road routes to the west coast. The expedition used camels in addition to horses and mules. The camels displayed considerable advantages. But the mules and horses were scared of the camels, and use of camels in eh U.S. was abandoned.
