Box canyon at El Morro National Monument

Description

The name "el morro" means "the bluff" or "the headland" in Spanish. And from the bottom, El Morro seems to be a large, solid sandstone bluff. But when one climbs to the top, there is a surprise box canyon hidden within. Though the surrounding terrain is pinyon-juniper woodland, protection from wind and contained runoff result in mixed-conifer forest within: ponderosa pine, Doug-fir, and Gamble oak. El Morro Nat'l Monument is located in west-central NM.
